Given the increasing numbers of academically qualified artists, some educated even to PhD level - there now exist Doctors of Art - an Art Surgery based on the idea of a Medical Doctor's Surgery, treating paintings and artefacts as patients, has become a real possibility. The first significant initiative of this type which took place in May 2010 is documented below. Dear Doctors
ReplyDeletePlease may I reiterate that the uncompleted DPhil work I gave trustingly into your good hands this afternoon in the form of notes and folders in a black tote bag should be returned to me intact once your diagnosis is made and your surgery closed. I am sure that you will take good care of said patient but my neurotic sensibilities have directed me to take the added step of sending you this email to make certain. As my good friend Fred Hoelderlin once observed: "Better to have checked and not lost than not to have obsessively compulsively checked in the first place". Ha! Dear Fred, how right he was.
Once more, in gratitude

Re: DPhil
Please go away and stop bothering us.
Dear Dr Jon
Thank you so much for your reply. The impoliteness, nay, rudeness of your bedside manner is entirely reassuring as it is proof of your impeccable credentials and professional standing as a Doctor.
With best wishes
As before etc . . .
Dr. Gilhooly, your approach to Customer Relationship Management must be addressed. I accept that you possess certain qualifications but this business also requires tact, hypocricy, greed. We are not government subsidised. In the interests of your own career could I suggest that you aquaint yourself with concepts such as 'the customer is always right', you get what you measure', 'we don't make #####, we make profits'?
