This picture requires many years of therapy. Many years.
ReplyDeleteThe PICTURE requires therapy. Why?
ReplyDeleteClearly the answer here lies in the fact that this can only be the work of art as it appears before me on screen - a binary matrix translated into shapes and colours. Therefore, what this picture 'wants' is scale, substance and materiality; haptic presence and a feeling of history or provenance. It is unable to speak with the authority of any of these qualities, or is unable wholly to display its muteness. Because of this, the immediate temptation is to comment upon the symbolic content of the image, in the same way that, were we to view images of 'psychic surgery' (also known a bare-handed healing) from the Philippines, its significance would be reduced (through the medium of photography) to a dialectical position between belief and skepticism. If on the other hand, we were to witness such a procedure in the flesh, our response would almost certainly be more complex and ambiguous.
